Additional Disabilities
Welcome to the Additional Disabilities section of the website.
In this section you will find information about supporting people with learning disabilities who may have additional or multiple disabilities.
It is estimated that 1.2 million people in England have mild to moderate disabilities and that around 150,000 people will have severe to profound disabilities (Valuing People Now 2009). Many people known to have learning disabilities will also have additional disabilities – some of which might be undetected or unrecognised.
It is important that carers and supporters of people with additional or multiple disabilities recognise the unique manner by which a person’s range of disabilities might impact upon the person’s ability to acquire skills or to interact with others and their community.
In this section you can find useful information about:
- supporting people who are visually impaired with learning disabilities
- supporting people who are hearing impaired with learning disabilities
- supporting people with learning disabilities who have communication difficulties and complex behaviour
All our visitors can watch the You & Eye film, about eye care and people with learning disabilities. All our information is able as factsheets or booklets.
