Enhanced eye tests for people with learning disabilities.

An enhanced eye testing service offers people with learning disabilities longer appointments with community practices, which are carried out by an optometrist with specialist training and equipment.

Currently 2 enhanced services are available, all being in the London area.

Eye examinations at home

An eye examination at home is only available to people who are unable to be attend a high street optometrist unaccompanied. This may be because of a mental, physical or learning disability.

When considering a home eye test bear in mind that a home eye test may be unlikely to provide the full range of testing equipment and resources nowadays to be found in a high street optometrist practice. Most people with learning disabilities, including those with multiple disabilities, can access high street optometrists with the support of someone who knows them well.

Use the advanced search on Look Up’s Optometrist’s data base to see if a service near you provides home visits. Alternatively contact NHS Direct or your local GP for their list of approved domiciliary eye care providers.
